Last night was going to be grand. And for a time it was. Kaitlyn and I ventured off to the AMC on Michigan Ave to take a free, early screening of Ponyo, and from what we saw of it, it’s absolutely amazing. Never have I laughed as loudly and as long at any film more than Miyazaki’s latest children’s masterpiece. That is until about an hour in when our projectionist put one of the reels in backwards, resulting in an upside down image and reversed audio and video.
Luckily, the folks at Disney, AMC, and AintItCool will be treating us once again to the film sometime next week. From what I’ve seen thus far, Ponyo firmly roots itself behind Spirited Away for my favorite Studio Ghibli film of all time - but then again, that’s just about how I feel about every Miyazaki film once I walk away from it on the big screen.
If you do get a chance to see Ponyo, please do. It’s the first film in a long time that I can remember that wholly understand what it means to be a child. And that’s just the first half.
